Edouard Mercier (1830-1908) & his wife Lucie Archambeau on their 50th wedding anniversary July 2nd, 1903 Springfield, Massachusetts. This is the only photograph known to exist of Edouard. There is one additional of Lucie, taken after her husbands death in 1908 and before her own in 1911 in front of her daughter Josephine (Mercier) Wands home in Springfield.

Edouard Mercier married Lucie Archambeau at Palmer, Hampden County, Massachusetts 2 July 1853. From the 1900 census we learn he had been in the United States about 5 years at that point, evidently so had Lucie. It is important to note neither Edouard's nor Lucie's parents ever traveled south into The United States. At least not that I am aware of.



Edouard Mercier was born 18 August 1830 at Saint-Roch des Aulnais, son of Charles Mercier and Marie-Victoire Belanger. He was one of the youngest of more than 20 children born during the 36 year marriage of his parents, which occurred 10 Feb 1812 at Saint-Jean-Port-Joli, Quebec.

Lucie Archambeau was born 24 January 1834 Saint-Jude-de-Saint-Hyacinthe, Qubec to Simon Archambeau & Josephte Lessard. This was a second marriage for both of her parents. Her father was 49 and her mother 29 at the time of her birth. Notice his very interesting signature at the bottom of her baptism record:

Edouard Mercier died (Pneumonia is listed as the cause of death) 11 March 1908 Springfield, Massachusetts. He was buried in Oak Grove Cemetary. Here are images of his death record and also of his Cemetary Stone.

Edouard Mercier (known in this country as Edward Mercier) was a blacksmith at The Watershops Pond Armory, and never owned his own home until he was 70 years old, which is proven by a deed dated 1900. His first independantlty owned home was on (originally Fargo) Russell Avenue (right off Boston Road near Russell's Restaurant) in Springfield. I took this picture of his house (it was still standing) about 1990. Edouard also converted late in life to Protestantism (Seventh Day Adventist from what I have been told over the years) after an incident involving his daughter Emma (Mercier) White. All of his children (except my great-great grandmother Lucy, who was the oldest and first to wed) married spouses of the Protestant faith. I suspect the conversion took place between 1880 and 1883.
